Victim Reports Identity Fraudulently Used In Income Tax Filing
A local man told authorities late last week that while filing his annual Individual Income Tax Return he discovered that someone had already fraudulently used his identity to do so.
The victim, age 56, reported the crime Friday to deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department. He said that he had used a company to file his income tax return and shortly afterwards was notified that someone had already filed, using his name and Social Security number.
He told deputies that he had recently received an odd correspondence from the Internal Revenue Service. He said that the only information listed correctly were his name and Social Security number.
The matter currently remains under investigation.
